Nerfs
Now a [1/4]
The 1-cost had emerged as one of the best cards in the game to grab priority, starting to be used even outside the End of Turn synergy. Then, from a global standpoint, this nerf makes sense. However, it is another blow to Invisible Woman First Steps and her signature archetype.

Now a [1/2]
This one doesn’t look like much, since Sauron rarely isn’t responsible for anything except disabling Ongoing abilities from Red Skull and such cards. Yet, there was a Supergiant deck using part of Sauron’s deck. In that one, the likes of Red Guardian or Negasonic Teenage Warhead would have loved to keep Sauron as [1/3] for priority sake.

Now a [4/6]
Just like Sauron above, Supergiant losing a power will make the deck weaker when it comes to holding priority. That should have an impact on most disruptive pieces in that archetype.
Speaking of disruptive piece :

Now a [6/8]
It is starting to feel like some targeting is in the air, as three cards from the best Supergiant deck lost a power in this OTA, and the back-up plan Sauron also took a hit.
Arguably, Alioth will remain a solid card as a [6/8]. Yet, not only it makes it a little harder to win against high power 6-cost cards which don’t care much about being disabled, Alioth will also not hold priority as often due to the other nerfs.
Both the raw and relative powers of the card have been nerfed, poor Alioth.
Now a [3/4]
[3/4] might be slower than [2/2], it is nowhere near bad enough to skip it if Move is a dominant synergy.
The bigger impact should be in the increased difficulty to play both Mercury and Cannonball over the course of a match. We now require 8 energy on the last turn, or have to invest three energies to get Mercury on the board early.

Now a [1/1]
Destroy had one of its best seasons ever in October, placing amongst the game’s top 5 archetype the entire time. Then, while X-23 as a [1/1] will lead to smaller Venoms or Knulls, I don’t think this is a very impactful change.
Buffs

Now a [6/5]
Leader need to gain more power to enter the discussion of competitive 6-cost cards in the game. The nerf to Alioth should help, but I expect Magneto, Doctor Doom, Galactus First Steps and such cards to fill that void.
Now a [3/4]
Nakia saw a bit of play in Silver Surfer decks, and sometimes in Buff heavy archetypes, although she never became a staple in either, especially after Viv Vision got buffed.
With one more power, Nakia improves her status of solid back-up plan for someone missing a buff for their deck.

SP/dr is now a [3/5]
The competition amongst 2-cost cards is probably the fiercest in the entire game, and I have a hard time believing this change will change Peni Parker’s status. The card has a great synergy with Wiccan, which could lead to seeing play. Otherwise, there are simply too many better options for this buff to be meaningful.

Now a [3/5]
A buff to an already solid archetype is always something to keep an eye on. Indeed, at the time of the OTA, War Machine Ramp is sporting a 0.4 cube average alongside a 59.5% win rate, enough to be considered in Tier 1 for our ranked tier list.
Arguably, 1 more power won’t change Electro that much, but priority is a huge part of Marvel Snap, so this will make the 3-cost more impactful when we can’t use Blink or Sersi to get rid of the Ongoing ability.
New Decks
Considering the metagame is balance at the moment, and all the changes are just light power changes, I don’t expect any deck to be radically different following this OTA. Especially in the buffs section, Electro and Nakia already pertain to certain synergies, which should welcome that extra power. As for Leader and Peni Parker, it doesn’t hurt to give them a try :
Typically, Electro wants to be thrown back in the deck with Blink. Yet, with Galactus First Steps in the deck, more power could always help to win the location of its herald, and results in two extra power at the end of the game.
Viv Vision is a better card than Nakia, but sometimes can’t seem to be winning its location against decks with a strong early game. In those environments, Nakia at least guarantees one buff, and now develops 4 power on the board.
I really have little faith in Leader seeing more play as a [6/5] than it did as a [6/4]. However, Alioth got nerfed in this OTA, meaning some decks might be in the business of finding a new 6-cost.
Arishem is the most likely to not suffer too much from that swap, while Leader could come down on turn five, meaning we could use Daredevil to know exactly what the opponent did on that turn.
Just like Leader, I don’t expect Peni Parker’s fortune with SP/dr becoming a 3/5, simply because there are many great 2-cost cards in the game to beat in order to earn a spot in a deck. Then, Peni Parker’s best shot likely will be to represent yet another make to help Wiccan trigger on turn four.
Closing Words
Overall, I don’t expect this OTA to change much to the current metagame, except for Supergiant possibly going away, or at least losing a ton of popularity. Then, the main question we have to answer is which archetypes will fill that void.
Expect the Undead Horde to gain even more popularity with joining the deck through Grand Arena. War Machine Ramp is another likely candidate with Electro buffed to spotlight that deck.
Silver Surfer, Arishem, Wiccan or Iron Hand also are likely candidate based on recent performances, and Nakia’s buff. Destroy will also be part of that list, even with X-23’s nerfed.
The metagame was quite balanced before this OTA, and nothing in this update appears to shake that balance. Second Dinner stated “We think Marvel Snap is a lot more fun when synergistic decks are at the top of the ladder”, and this is a step in that direction. Red Guardian, Spider-Ham and a few others will keep the flexible decks at bay for the moment, but expect the average points per game to rise in the future.
That’s it for this OTA review. You can find everyone from the Marvel Snap Zone team in our community discord, alongside plenty of people to share your excitement about those changes.
Good Game Everyone!
