Welcome back to this week’s Developer Update! This week’s edition comes after the launch of the new Series 5 card Caliban! If you don’t know if Caliban is worth Snap Packs or tokens, make sure to check out our Bonus Challenge guide for a post-release review of the card and new decklists!

Also be sure to check out the weekly variant competition! You can enter each week for a chance to win a season pass for the current season, or save your prize for the start of the next season!

Answers and questions may be slightly rephrased for more clarity and ease of reading. This week’s topics will be divided into Card Specific Questions, Other Questions, and Questions From You!

Card Specific Questions

Q: Thor was recently buffed to 3/5 from 3/4. When Beta Ray Bill was buffed previously, the stat boost was given to Stormbreaker. What’s the rationale for buffing Thor over his hammer Mjolnir?
A: Glenn “Points on Thor are smaller than points on Bill, because Stormbreaker’s effect is multiplicative but Mjolnir is additive.”

Q: The Korean text for Zombie Cpt Marvel says:
“Give +3 power to each cards”

And Chamber Korean text says:
“Give +2 power to 5+ cost cards here and in hand”

Is this a translation error? Or are the cards bugged?
A: Griffin “I’ve let the team know and we’ll get it fixed. Thank you.

Q: Why does War Machine give a constant notice to both players that they can play anywhere, but Stardust doesn’t add any clear reminder that playing a card may do nothing?
A: Glenn “War Machine’s VFX is indicating the capability of its owner to the opponent–it’s quite common for locations and cards to affect whether a play can be legally made, so knowing that War Machine is out is important to understanding many games. Stardust doesn’t add additional capability to games, just takes some away–and many games can transpire with the effect having no impact whatsoever.

There’s a tightrope to walk on how much information to present visually, because the more we levy, the greater the burden of just processing any given board state becomes. Ongoing VFX have a high burden in this regard, since they eat the most real estate.”

Q: If Iron Lad hits Rama Tut, will he trigger powers from before Rama-Tut’s time, or from before Iron Lad’s time?
A: Glenn “Rama-Tut”

Other Questions

Q: Why did you make button presses worse by forcing a long press to buy or redeem things?
A: Griffin “I’ve shared this feedback on the ‘long press’ timing length with the team.”

Q: I got a 4 day 10% discount on Series 5 packs. Just wondering why and if this is a new thing?
A: Griffin “You’re not mistaken and it’s brand new! We’re always trying new things and want to know your thoughts. Let us know what you think.”

Q: Why wasn’t there any announcement for releasing the new pack discounts?
A: Griffin “In general, we don’t pre-announce discounts, sales, or most bundles arriving in the Shop.

As we’re always testing new things, we wanted to drop it so we could see how it performs without any additional marketing or announcement.”

Q: Is the team aware that “new” variants are reappearing in the shop, despite no longer being new?
A: Griffin “Yes, we’re aware of this issue and the team is looking into it.”

Q: Do locations effects really need to be RNG based? Like 25% chance to destroy a card?
A: Glenn “The nature of the location pool is that it has a range of effects. Some are soft, some are intense. That dynamic is important to the goals of the system, which is to add enough variation to the game that it remains endlessly exciting and interesting to play. Flattening their outputs wouldn’t be conducive to that goal.

Snap is pretty clearly a skill-rewarding game–you can see that on display in our events and via many of our content creators. There’s a *much* stronger case to be made that Snap has too little RNG than too much, relative to best practices in CCGs.”

Q: Some emotes were once in limited time mode shops, but haven’t returned since. Will these ever come back?
A: Griffin “The Emotes will definitely return at some point. We’re still working on plans for exactly how and when. Same goes for the Variants as well.”

Q: Is there a graveyard for cards that could be made for things like “cards Blob absorbed?”
A: Glenn “There’s not enough meaningful differentiation between different Banish effects for that to be worthwhile, IMO”

Q: Any plans for a location centered OTA?
A: Glenn “We don’t currently have any plans for a large location update, but we’ll continue to tweak new individual locations as we see issues/interactions arise. And we have a VFX backlog for existing locations that missed the first time around.”

Q: Why are there bundles that appear in my webshop when it’s signed out, but they disappear when I sign in. There is a copycat and a wasp bundle that I would like to purchase but they disappear when I sign in.
A: Griffin “Those bundles aren’t scheduled to go live until later this month. Not sure why they’re showing up when logged out. I’ve let the relevant teams know about this issue.”

Q: Why am I starting to see more expensive bundle costs on the webshop when compared to in app shop? Some differences are negligible, but the new Chambrr bundle is 10 CAD$ more expensive. Some other bundles show the exact same price in both shops. Why is that?
A: Griffin “Thanks for letting us know. I’ve alerted the appropriate team and they’re currently investigating.”

Questions From You!

Each week, I ask readers of the weekly dev update to leave their questions down in the comment section. That way we can ask those questions on your behalf, or let you know the answers if those questions have been asked before! I read each comment you leave, so I will be adding this section at the end of each week’s edition to highlight your questions that you asked last week!

Q: Is the team aware of player’s wanting some way to target variants they want to get?
A: Griffin “We’re aware that players wish there was a way for them to target certain variants, absolutely. Some of this is by design but we’re always looking for ways to improve the Variant Shop.”
