What is Conquerors?

Marvel Snap Conquerors is a tournament hosted by Second Dinner and run by Nuverse and Tribe Gaming where 16 Marvel Snap streamers compete to see who’s best.

The community also got to vote for a winner and received 250 Credits for doing so. Anyone who picked the winner gets the Deathlok Deathsquawk variant and if you already have the variant, 1,200 Gold in its place.

How Did the Tournament Work?

All players in the tournament chose two cards and then auto-built the rest of the deck. They could then change two more cards in the deck.

After that, the players played on a closed ladder against each other for one hour. At the end of that hour, the 4 lowest-ranked players were eliminated. This was repeated for two more half-hour periods with 4 more eliminations leading to a Top 4.

The Top 4 faced off in single-elimination battle mode to determine the champion.

Who Were the Players?

Controversy About Contestants

Originally included in the lineup of participants featured both KM Best and Kawa.

That changed when a prominent streamer Eggs correctly noted that of the 16 participants, only one was a woman:

Despite her being correct, the worst corners of the internet spent days attacking Eggs with various prominent community members noting that she was correct, representation did matter, and not only was their only one woman, but there were no notable African Americans – of particular note, EducatedCollins wasn’t invited – nor was there a single invitee from South America despite the plethora of streamers from that continent.

At this, Kawa backed out of the tournament for personal reasons while KM Best had the following to say:

In the end, both KK Sparkles and Felicity were added to the tournament replacing Kawa and KM Best.

Congratulations and Thank You to Eggs for being a spark to the change we need.

The Round of 16

The round of 16 kicked off with numerous players bringing top-tier decks, as the deck builder quickly proved to be able to get these players to the best decks in the game in the current format.

Round highlights include the following:

  • Alex Coccia made it through due to a Moyen 8-cuber by playing The Infinaut, Abomination, and She-Hulk for a 39-power turn 7 that effectively eliminated Moyen.
  • Felicity beat Lamby thanks to a Blob that came out of The Raft.
  • At the end, Spyro was eliminated by 1 point to Amano, 3142 to 3143.

Eliminated this round were Spyro, Moyen, KK Sparkles, and Mr. Zariweya.

The Round of 12

The round of ten got intense with a nice leisurely pace early followed by a bunch of high-stakes games at the end of the round as players desperately tried to make the Top 8.

The round highlights this time were as follows:

  • Braude lost an 8-cuber to a then-first-place Johnson by playing Alioth on the right lane instead of an Invisible Woman. Ms. Marvel ended up below Invis.
  • Lamby got into 1st place and basically stopped playing to preserve his position.
  • Alex Coccia climbed all the way to #2 by the end of the round with High Evo InSheNaut.

Bynx, Braude, Owi, and the mighty Dera fell in this round.

The Round of 8

The round of 8 saw top players get out to early leads then turtle, as both Lamby and Amano flew ahead of the pack to an unreachable degree and Amano, playing Sandman Ramp overtook Lamby for first place.

Highlights:

  • Ordinary Harry, frustrated by early losses, went to The Phoenix Force deck and almost climbed back into the cut.
  • Felicity had a shot at knocking down Johnson, but her Rogue missed a 1/3 chance at Cerebro.
  • Alex, in fifth place with ten seconds left, just didn’t get enough cubes in his last game to make the top 4, though we missed it on the mainstream who cut away at that pivotal game.

Alex Coccia, Ordinary Harry, Nina, and Felicity went out at the end of this round with both Lamby and Amano getting to 4k points, meaning they each gained a thousand in the two hours of the tournament.

The Top 4

At the Top 4, we went to Battle Mode. The first Top 4 game was Amano with Sandman Ramp vs. Attrix who brought Loki. Although Attrix was favored, Loki just didn’t show up in many games, so Sandman was able to limit plays and power enough for a big lead.

This is where the America Chavez change hurts Loki decks, as the lesser consistency of seeing Loki combined with stellar play from Amano really combined to end the match. Attrix’s run ended when he played Cosmo in the wrong lane and left a Doctor Doom able to be hit by Odin on Amano’s side.

The other Top 4 match featured Marvel Snap heavyweights Johnson and Lamby. Johnson is the Korean streamer who always seems near the top of these tournaments, usually with something wildly off-meta, while Lamby is the best player in the game.

Johnson played a hard counter to Lamby’s famous Loki deck, bringing a finely tuned Cerebro 3. Lamby had two major outs against the deck – Rogue and Snowguard. Rogue could stop a Cerebro or an Iron Man while Snowguard could ruin plans for Magik.

Lamby took an early game for 4-cubes when both snapped, using a Rogue to steal an Iron Man and then a stolen Mystique to copy it and that put Johnson on the backfoot. A few early Snaps from Lamby forced Johnson down into a more precarious position so that in a game where Maria Hill generated Luke Cage for Lamby and one location was Sewer System, Johnson was left with no outs and knocked out of the tournament.

The Finals

The finals were then set to a matchup between the relatively unknown (in the West) Satoshi Amano and the best player in Marvel Snap, Lamby. Both players kept the same decks as prior, so Lamby was left with Loki against Sandman.

The games were intensely back and forth with Lamby able to go wide sometimes, but being forced to retreat to Amano’s Professor X into Alioth plays, although, in true Lamby fashion, we almost never actually saw Alioth reveal and the retreats were for less than maximum cubes due to that.

Lamby was able to take a huge lead when Gamma Lab was filled by him with Bar with No Name in one of the other locations. That meant the game would be down to tiebreakers and 48 power meant that tie-breaker always went to Lamby.

Satoshi was able to win one more game, but a double Miniaturized Lab game proved his undoing. The one playable location was won by Lamby, but the other two locations had Amano in the lead, granting him priority. A correctly placed Alioth would win the game and Lamby could only play Gamora thanks to Sandman.

Gamora right was the only play that would beat a last-turn Doctor Doom, but Alioth was a 50-50. Lamby went for the sure win on Sandman, assuming Amano would overthink the play, and thus was able to claim victory.

Here are the Top 2 decks in the game. If you’d like play guides for all of the Top 4, check my daily video on this YouTube channel.
